The Significance of Blue
Like the blue sky or the sea opening up new horizons, blue and its various shades—such as turquoise and cyan—are deeply connected to dreams, wisdom, and serenity.
Blue is one of the most beloved colors in the Western world, as it is omnipresent in our surroundings. It echoes life, travel, and discovery—both in a literal sense and through personal introspection. Like refreshing, life-giving water, blue possesses a pure quality that helps one rediscover an inner calm rooted in the depths of things.
Blue is a symbol of truth, much like clear water that has nothing to hide.
While this color appeals to all generations, it should be used with moderation. It can quickly become overwhelming if overused. We recommend contrasting dark blue with lighter shades such as white or beige.
Turquoise and light blues pair perfectly with shades of brown.
- Positive meaning: dreams, wisdom, serenity, truth, loyalty, freshness
- Negative meaning: Melancholy
- Representations : ocean, sky, flowers (Cornflower)
The Significance of White
While white is not a color in the strictest sense of the word, it is widely categorized as such by the general public
This is likely because, from an optical perspective, white is the chromatic synthesis of all visible wavelengths.
This undoubtedly explains the meaning it is given in the West: that of unity and perfect balance.
For generations, white has been linked to marriage, purity, and innocence, as well as a sense of perfection and the divine—as seen in the papal garments.
True 'natural' whites are rarely found in the wild.
White is perfectly suited to every context: it pairs flawlessly with all colors, and it is a shade one never grows tired of.
However, one should avoid overusing it; in graphic design, white can feel 'empty' and bland if it is too dominant.
It is therefore best when accompanied by other colors; in fact, there are no restrictions regarding its use, as it coordinates perfectly with the entire color spectrum!
- Positive meaning: purity, innocence, virginity, marriage.
- Negative meaning : none
- Representation: snow, light, milk, wedding dress
The Significance of Black
Just like white, black is not a color in the strict sense of the word; however, it is associated with them from a psychological perspective, as black conveys symbolism just as a color does.
Scientifically, black refers to black holes and nothingness. In optics, black absorbs all wavelengths and is therefore characterized by its apparent absence of color—unlike white, which is obtained by reflecting all the wavelengths it receives in equal measure.
In the West, black is associated with mourning, sadness and despair, fear and death. Represented by the attire of priests and nuns, it also echoes authority, austerity, and rigor.
Behind this dark side, black also offers another face, associated with elegance and simplicity. This is perhaps because black acts as a neutral color, one that does not, strictly speaking, express passionate feelings.
It is true that black is the dark color par excellence.
It pairs with almost every color and will rarely shock, even when used excessively. As with white, however, one should avoid using it alone too often. Black can quickly echo emptiness and sadness.
It is recommended to always accompany it with a warm or pale color to enhance its style.
- Positive meaning : elegance, simplicity, sobriety, rigor, mystery
- Negative : death, mourning, sadness, emptiness, darkness
- Representation: darkness (night), certain animals (blackbird, crow, cats)
